FALL into obsession [Oct. 26th, 2006|11:00 pm]
[Current Music |Buffalo]

As this summer had the most rain I can remember, fall 2006 is proving to be one of the coldest I remember.
What is keeping me hot are the following

1. TheUsaisAmonster. Chris Knux. If you read this, buy their new record.

2. Gilmore Girls box set. Laugh if you want to, but I relate the following story.

My roomate (whose English is not that great) walks into my room, wearing nothing but his oversized IDF t shirt, and some and asks "this is women show yes?"
I reply that its the most well written show on basic television (which isnt totally true) and I love the charcters.
He looks puzzled and says "I dont think its for men" and walks away.

2 days later, I stumble home a little drunk and there is mister macho IDF watching the box set. All he can say is
"its good. I like the Lorelai"
Another convert.

3. The fact that I saw the Borat movie in July and it comes out next week.

4. Bears look perfect this year. My inner jock is having an orgasam.

What I dont really dig is the new copy of Heeb magazine. Its pretty played out and not funny anymore. Ironic Jewish humor. Not that good.

Guilt and Pleasure magazine = very good.

Just say no to dates [Aug. 29th, 2006|03:46 pm]
Never go on a date. That goes double for never go on a date when you are hooked up with a friends wife's sister. It makes things really fucking messy. Also, if the said date suggests going to see Snakes on a Plane, forget it.

Dates are stupid. I did this as a favor and it was the longest 4 hours of my life.

Hours that were not spent at the movie were spent listening to her talk about her fucking job and her car.

Im going gay. Thats the big news. Just no gay sex or kissing or spooning with guys.
It looks like gay summer won in the end.

Oh, and the new Wickerman comes out this week. Fuck that noise. Nick Cage is a tool

burning time [Aug. 24th, 2006|08:06 pm]
[Current Music |Lucksmiths]

My mother loves to send me daily prayers, blessings and various in-box clutter on a hourly basis.
I dont mind, some of it is good, some of it borders on the goy-ish side. Or maybe its reform Jewish-ish?
Who can tell these days?
Anyway, I have Gmail, and Im not sure if its the same with all e mail but a lot of my e mails get links that are found thru the keywords in your e mail.
The website below was found on mine.

http://whywontgodhealamputees.com/video.htm

I found this to be in bad taste for many reasons. Not really my own personal beliefs, but for the millions and millions of people who find the only comfort in their lives thru prayer. Why would anybody want to take that away?

Then I realized a goo percentage of those people are too poor to even know what a computer is, so I guess they are targeting schmucks like myself?

weak. So fucking weak. This week. [Aug. 23rd, 2006|07:24 pm]
[Current Music |soft boys]

New York Jews, totally letting me down. Got the following two things off Jewschool.

1. A "die in"?
http://jewishconscience.blogspot.com/

Its fine. Really.

I like this comment left on the Jewschool comments page

"don’t these people have real jobs?
i think “underinformed, pampered u.s. jewish college students supported by their underinformed, pampered u.s. jewish parents protest something they don’t really know all that much about” would make better signage.
get a haircut!"

Why do all the good protests and rallies happen on Mondays? And why the fuck wasnt I at this to make fun of these people?

2. Jews for Jeter? Jews for fucking JETER?!?!?!

No son. Nah.

http://www.jewishfashionconspiracy.com/index2.html

Jews for motherfuking Shawn Green and the Mets!

Jeter. Feh.

Dear Lacoste yarmulke.
I want one of you. Because I want to be a baller like all the other ex-Yeshiva boys out there.

Why cant I find you on-line? Must I go to Crown Heights and ask my cousin to find me one?
Please dont make me do that.

Insert any Big Star lyrics...now [Aug. 17th, 2006|12:39 am]
[Current Mood | confused]
[Current Music |Dude. Big Star. Come on!]

The main rules I have always stuck to in terms of music is
1. Bob Dylan
2. Velvets
3. 13th floor elevators
4. Leonard Cohen
5. Sabbath
6. Stones

Im a huge music dork. I have loads of records, but I kinda consider those the basics. In that order.
However, there is one band that kinda hovers over them all. If you liked comic books in the 80s, its sorta like during Secret Wars. There were the good guys, the bad guys and then there is the shit that is from another universe that really doesnt give a fuck about that shit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_Wars

So, I make that comparison because I did a lot of drugs in high school and I think my mind is still clouded a little bit.
However, in the "secret wars" of music, Big Star is that band that gives very little fuck about all the other shit.
How do I know? Well, I dont. I like to sound smart.
In truth, they were just a band, that put out 2 of the greatest pop records ever. As great of songcraft as The Beatles or the Kinks. As sugar sweet perfect as The Ramones or The Archies (I am typing this with a straight face.) and totally the end all say all best power pop band of them all.
Cheap Trick. I fucking LOVE them, but they arent Big Star.
Badfinger. Amazing. Nope.
Raspberries? Neh.
Groovies? Sorry mang.

Why? Because Big Star can sum up every fucked up emotion. Take how I am feeling as of late.

"Wont you let me walk you home from school
Wont you let me meet you at the pool
Maybe friday I can
Get tickets for the dance
And Ill take you

Wont you tell your dad, get off my back
Tell him what we said about paint it, black
Rock n roll is here to stay
Come inside where its okay
And Ill shake you.

Wont you tell me what youre thinking of.
Would you be an outlaw for my love
If its so, well, let me know
If its no, well, I can go.
I wont make you."

The song is called "Thirteen". Yes, it was written by a 20 something and maybe it sounds a bit creepy when you take it in that context, but...
THATS THE FUCKING SONG!. Romantic? Yes. chessy, fuck yes sir! Heartfelt? Lord have mercy.

If you listen to one of the three Big Star albums, or the Chris Bell solo album and dont connect to at least ONE of the songs, Im sorry. You lack soul.

There is really no reason for this rant. Ive had a wonderful day. I just think Big Star is the most underrated band of all time.

Hey I can do this!
Its called "how I earned my college education"

sleepwalk [Aug. 16th, 2006|07:32 am]
[Current Music |The Byrds "Space odyssey"]

Back in New York. Israel was tops.
It makes me proud how strong people in Israel are.
I cant wait to get out of here and go to school there. Of course I dont see myself living there for good, but who knows?

I listened to "This is Hardcore" by Pulp a lot on my Ipod. After years of being bashed over the head with "Common People" at every club and party I ever went to, Jarvis and company began to hurt my ears.
That of course is a totally diffrent album. "This is hardcore" is 100X's better.

Also, the store I have worked at for over a year is closing today.
While I have been blessed with a new job that is at a wonderful place
http://www.joetheartofcoffee.com/
along with school coming up in a week, Im really going to miss this palce, and the people I have met here.

COME ON!

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/vandals-hit-bondi-jewish-youth-centre/2006/08/02/1154198178437.html

This has been the worst year for rock n roll deaths. I signed on today to read Arthur Lee singer of one of the greatest bands of all time, Love. Actually, news-wise, this has been a pretty awful year. Serioulsy, I could use some good news for once. Other than the heatwave being over.

The August mix CD is finished. Let me know if you want one.
Since this LJ is a new thing, I make a mix every month or so, its a mix of stuff Im listening to, DJing, etc.

1. T Rex "Calling all destroyers"
2.Deep Purple "You fool no one"
3. Wimple Winch "everybodies worried about tommorow"
4. Oakley Hall "Having Fun again"
5. Rev. Gary Davis "I belong to the band-Hallejulah"
6. Francoise Hardy "Le temps de in mour"
7. Pink Mountiantops "I (fuck) mountiantops)
8. John The Revelator "Worried Dreams"
9. Frijid Pink "Sing a song for freedom"
10. Dead Meadow "Lady"

State of the Brooklyn [Aug. 2nd, 2006|09:25 am]
[Current Music |The Damned]

Really quick, I want to name the best bands in Brooklyn. This is how I see it. Im usually wrong, but who knows.
The best bands in Brooklyn are...

1. Oakley Hall
http://www.myspace.com/oakleyhall

Look at their influences! Listen to their new record on Brah records. Totally the record of the year. They are on tour with M. Ward, and then Calexico.

2. Oneida.
www.enemyhogs.com

Totally the most important band from brooklyn in the last 5+ years. Also the blogs on their site are good.
I still need to pick up the newest one.

3. TV on the Radio

In Brooklyn, when a band starts getting big, they get shit on by EVERYBODY. Personally I could care less. They are like the ROxy Music of our time.

4. Awesome Color

http://www.myspace.com/awesomecolor

Duuuuuude. Everything good pre-punk mixed with post-punk (that sounded so fucking stupid), these guys use as influence. They just played with Rocket from the Tombs the other night.

5. Black Dice

http://www.astralwerks.com/black_dice/

Kinda on the same level as Oneida, except on a diffrent plane. Im sure you understand what I mean.

6. Lights
http://www.myspace.com/lightsmakemusic

I love them. They just toured with Brightblack Morning Light.
I think they are one of the best of what people label "freak folk" or whatever they are calling it?
I dunno. Anyways, listen to the MP3'.

7. Coy Dogs
http://www.myspace.com/thecoydogs

Dudes. Total dudes. I love them. Everybody I know that has heard their demo is converted. I hear traces of Gun Club, Everly Brothers, Byrds, etc.

8. Titan

I cant find their website, but believe me, they are around. Loudest band in New York. Can. Hawkwind. Faust. LOUD NOISES!

There are others. Tunnel Of love. Stalkers. ROxy Pain. Livefastdie.

I post this all for two reasons. One because I think the media has really made a joke out of one of the best music communities in the world, two because people asking me.

I have a lot of this stuff. Some of these bands have stuff out. Go check them out.

Micha 4:3
All that talk about "beat swords into plowshares" is part of the reason I love the book of Micha so much.

I remember reading a while back in the "Jewish Catologue" they talk about "ways to bring Moshiach" and they talk about "going to the nearest army base and doing the above mentioned act.

While I dont think that is the best idea, the symbolisim behind it is wonderful.

The current issue of Arthur Magazine, the guy in Brightblack morning light, is wearing a button that says, yup "beat swords into plowshares"

That term really jumps out at me. Always has. Maybe its the naive part of me that thinks sooner or later there is going to be some sort of peace in this world.

Anyways. Ill take one of those buttons in the meantime.

One thing Im wondering about Arthur Magazine, is where the hell did Deans Beans go?
I miss his insane stories about going to South America to ride on death trains with bean farmers.
His coffee is great.

First, Im really sad about this

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060729/ap_on_re_us/seattle_shooting;_ylt=Asv43BGO7YkWJWhQgRybh66s0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3OTB1amhuBHNlYwNtdHM-

I work with the United Jewish federation. They do wonderful things, and the people who work for the federation are great people. This is really a terrible thing.

Its really scary how messed up our world is. What scares me even more than that is that nobody in America seems to care.
I really do believe my parents generation, seemed to care.
All my friends growing up made fun of me for liking Creedence Clearwater Revival or Bob Dylan because that was "hippie stuff". One of my skinhead friends had a patch on his jacket that said "Greatful when they are all dead".

When they thought of hippies, I think they thought of these "hippies"

I dont really dig them.

I thought more of...

or...

I love old hippies. Sometimes I feel like one. Minus the old thing. A lot of the stuff Im into today, all because of a hippie.
When my friends and I would go to this old record store in Crystal Lake Il. (one of the only stores for miles) that was owned by this old guy named Skip. We would always go in there to try and see if he had gotten anything in like Crass or Black Flag. From time to time he would. Some local crustie would need cash, and sell him his vinyl. The stuff was about 10 years outdated (lyrics-wise. Regan and Thatcher were gone)but it was "punk" and important, it spoke to me much more than any of the crap the kids at school liked. However, I really was not interested in anarchy or smashing down the wall. Still felt right.
I remember one day Skip telling us, "no guys, not today, but you should check out this re-issue by this band The Sonics. We got them in today."
The needle went down into the groove, and as soon as I heard that drum beat in the song "The Witch" I was totally into it.
Siting in the corner, one of the locals that would hang out and shoot the shit all day looked at us and said "you guys are hearing REAL punk".
I found something that was even more outdated than anything on SST (even tho I still think that is one of the best labels ever), but I felt more in common with it. Suddenly I was converted.
Ive been in hundreds of record shops(and Ive spent a college educations worth of cash at the all), but this one was the most special. Wood panel walls, wooden crates to hold vinyl, jazz always blaring out of the speakers. Incense, always burning. Maybe because there was a sign on the wall that said "No smoking. Unless its a joint."
It was a safe-haven from all the bullshit in that redneck area my mom moved me to when I was in my early teens.
Sometimes we would trade weed for records. Other times we would go get him lunch or coffee. After a few months, we would work there for credit.
Every moment was a learning experience. Skip would tell us about how he smoked with Duane Almond, or about how he got lost in the desert on his motorcycle, and ended up meeting Charlie Manson, and about how he got arrested at the 1968 democratic convention http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_Democratic_Convention

Not for rioting, but for fucking his girlfriend under a tree while everybody else rioted.
"They fucking pulled me out of her man." Fucking rioters.

With all that said, I really want to go to Big Sur in a few weeks for the Quiet Quiet forrest Spectrum fest. Brightblack Morning Light, Lavendar Diamond, the guy from Lungfish and a bunch more are playing. Maybe some cool hippies will be there?

Plus I have always wanted to visit the Henry Miller library (which is where the event is being held).

[Current Music |Nina Simone covering "I shall be released"]

To start this off, I wanted to post a link to another livejournal I stumbled on. I try my best to stay far away from politics. With the current situation in the middle east however, its a bit diffrent.
Im pro-Israel. I dont believe in violence, unless totally necessary, and I believe that is part of being Jewish (something that is very important to me). These pictures sum that feeling up. These pictures make me swell up with a mix of pride and worry
The guy who took these deserves some sort of award. For now he gets my "Total mensch" award.
